We don't talk about short films on The Playlist a lot, simply because we don't see that many of them that we find remarkable (and admittedly, we don't watch a ton), but last night at the New York Film Festival we saw a rather fantastic little one out of New Zealand called, "This Is Her."
A hilariously black and cynical tale by director Katie Wolfe and writer Kate McDermott, "This Is Her," centers on Kylie, a prepubescent child that is a "bitch," because one day she's going to grow up and steal Wolfe's (also the protagonist of the film) husband and wreck her marriage. According to the deliciously pessimistic film, "In life there are no fairytale endings."Short Synopsis: As she watches her younger self in the throes of childbirth, Evie’s deliciously wry commentary reveals exactly what life has in store for her new baby daughter, her loving husband - and the six-year-old ‘bitch’ who will one day steal his affections and destroy Evie’s life.
The film's music is written by Geoff Maddick of Kewie indie rockers, Goldenhorse and the short's closing song is an excellent little number by the band called, "The Last Train." You can hear the song on their Myspace page and it's rather cinematic in that indie manner that's thankfully, not as cheesy as say a Death Cab song.
"This Is Her" is Wolfe's first short as a director (she's done some TV) and hopefully the next thing she does is team-up with McDermott again, cause it's a winning combination and they're officially on our 'one's to watch list' from now on.

Glad you liked the film, it's good to know that it is finding an audience on the other side of the world.
Katie and I have teamed up since 'This Is Her', on a prime time TV series here in New Zealand called Go Girls (www.southpacificpictures.com) - a comedy/drama which will screen here next year.

Nice to hear you guys are still working together. I thought the short was fantastic and funny as all hell, in an amazingly dry way. Plus it an excellent original female voice that we don't see a lot of. Keep up the great work.
