'500 Days' Indie Deluxe Soundtrack Revealed

We've repeatedly referred to "500 Days of Summer" as "The Shins of indie movies" and, upon reviewing the recently revealed soundtrack, it seems we were right, at least musically speaking. It contains every imaginable twee-as-fuck indie rock song EXCEPT something from The Shins (who are still so tainted by that "Garden State" mention that they're not permitted to place their songs prominently in any indie films until 2020 according to direct orders from Jesus - but he was wearing a trucker hat at the time so the binding legality is obviously questionable).

We understand this movie has some questionable song & dance moments in it and we're guessing, since the soundtrack listing doesn't list performers for these two songs, that they're to the Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man," The Clash's "Train In Vain (Stand By Me)," Belle & Sebastian's "Boy with the Arab Strap" and the theme song from Knight Rider. The dudes at /Film report the songs below are what we can expect.

1. The Smiths "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
2. Regina Spektor "Us"
3. Belle & Sebastian "The Boy with the Arab Strap"
4. Black Lips "Bad Kids"
5. Patrick Swayze "She's Like the Wind"
6. The Smiths "Please, Please, Please Let Me What What I Want"
7. Poison "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"
8. Lee Hazelwood "Sugar Town"
9. The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man"
10. Lee Greenwood "God Bless The U.S.A."
11. Jack Penate "Have I Been A Fool?"
12. Doves "There Goes the Fear"
13. Hall & Oates "You Make My Dreams"
14. The Temper Trap "Sweet Disposition"
15. Carla Bruni "Quelqu'um M'a Dit"
16. Black Lips "Veni Vidi Vici"
17. Paper Route "The Music"
18. The Clash "Train In Vain"
19. Feist "Mushaboom"
20. Kevin Michael "At Last"
21. Regina Spektor "Hero"
22. Spoon "The Infinite Pet"
23. Simon & Garfunkel " Bookends"
24. Wolfmother "Vagabond"
25. Mumm-Ra "She Got You High"
Director Marc Webb had a previous career as a music video director and, in that capacity, helmed a couple of Regina Spektor videos, was responsible for My Chemical Romance's early visual campaigns and has worked extensively with Weezer. That's about the sum of his credible career, the rest of the time it was mostly terrible one hit wonders and Fergie. We'll cross our fingers that he's got the indie part of the indie film aesthetic under control.

I don't give a shit about the movie, but that's a pretty decent soundtrack if you ask me. Glad to see two of The Smiths best songs in there (and glad How Soon Is Now wasn't used for once). They don't get used enough in film, though they are perfect for it.

Discovering "Train In Vain" on the London Calling LP was one of the happiest moments of my young life.

Cirkusfolk, I totally agree about The Smiths--they should be used more in film. Ironically enough, it was "Please Please Please" as used in, ready for it?.......Never Been Kissed that turned me on to them when I was 14.

Uhhh... Patrick Swayze? NOW I'm intrigued.

Eliza, I didn't even know that song was in Never Been Kissed, as I never saw that film. I might have to watch it just to see how it's used. I subconsiously came to love that song via an instrumental cover version played during the musuem scene in Ferris Buehler, but didn't know if it has been used in any films since (it was in Pretty in Pink also).

Also, I made the How Soon Is Now comment not because I dislike the song (I love it) but because Charmed kinda ruined it, and its use in The Wedding Singer wasn't what it should've been.

Yeah, I like "How Soon Is Now?" well enough, but I hate that it's the Smiths song people think of when there are such better songs in their catalog. And as far as Patrick Swayze goes, I'll be the first in line to knock that song, and yet, if it's on the radio, I will inevitably listen to the whole thing....

This is why i kinda hate indie rock and all the music listed in this film: indie rock is the new mariah carey. there's no bite to any of this music and people who think this stuff isn't as mainstream as apple pie are deluding themselves.

They might as well call this soundtrack Now That's What I Call Indie-Rock!
