Spike Lee Says Boycott New York Post Over Racist Obama Cartoon

If you're not a New Yorker you're totally forgiven for not hearing about this backstory.

The lovely, right-wing centric New York Post published a
cartoon on Wednesday which, by many, many interpretations, compared President Obama and his stimulus bill with a crazed chimp The Huffington Post explains:

"The drawing, from famed cartoonist Sean Delonas, is rife with violent imagery and racial undertones. In it, two befuddled-looking police officers holding guns look over the dead and bleeding chimpanzee that attacked a woman in Stamford, Connecticut. 'They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill,' reads the caption."

It's blatantly racist and as of yesterday, the Post wrote a conditional, half-hearted apology (as they took the forum to call their critics "opportunists" in the same mea culpa space - bad form) But a protest led by the Reverend Al Sharpton which director Spike Lee attended said the "apology" wasn't enough and he's calling for a boycott of the paper.

"This is not the end. It's not just black folks. It's an insult to everybody." Lee told around 300 demonstrators on Friday, who marched in front of the Post's offices shouting, "Shut it down." The director was also joined by his 11-year-old son.

While we have linked to NYPost gossip in the past, as their entertainment writers generally have a decent track record for real news amidst the BS (Sienna Miller is gone from "Notthingham" "Robin Hood," but yes, as we said, her gossip surrounding the exit was garbage), we don't endorse that shitty rag and if you're a New Yorker like us, you should probably be reading anything but, regardless of this imbroglio (we recommend the NYTimes instead).

Is the Post fucking serious? That's crazy. I always knew it was a shit paper, but now, holy fucking shit, burn those fuckers to the ground.

Is it wrong that I scowl at people on the subway who read it openly?

I've been scowling at them for about for the entire almost-decade i've been in NY. yes.

I wish people both black and white would really read what they said. They will have to find someone else to write the bill. The president did not write the bill that he signed. The congress wrote it.

Anon, they imagined a black man as an ape. There's no context where that would be acceptable. Or fucking amusing- if this were the 1800's, you may have a point.

The retards are just gonna try and bait you, Gabe. Leave it.

I saw the cartoon and thought it was meant for Congress (as in a room full of monkeys)! Get off your racial high horse and get on to more important things, Spike. Unless you are looking for a bribe like Jesse Jackson got from budweiser for his kids.

I dont understand. How can people like Spike Lee and the NAACP demand actions like this over a cartoon, when they take no action and in fact defend, Roland Burris. He is real, he is not a cartoon. He is dishonest and disceitful. The cartoon is a drawing. The real point is we should take of the real life problems we all face and stop worrying about cartoons.

Mike said...

This cartoon had nothting to do with race. The NAACP has nothing better to do then cry race on any issue they can. I don't have a political view that you could say is left or right, but this cartoon was obviously calling the people who are responsible for the bill, that is the stimulus package, a bunch of chimps. Yes, I'm sure there were not any white people that had anything do with the bill.....

Anonymous said...

Thank you, yes Obama didn't write the dam bill. Just something these guys saw they new the could capitalize on and get in the news. They saw dollar signs. Anyone with half a brain can understand what the cartoon was meant to depict.

Didn't ALL people evolve from apes?

The artist is just trying to take Attorney General Holder’s advice and stop being a coward. Holder said that we should talk openly about these issues. So what if the artist is calling Obama a chimp? (Which is, of course, a ridiculous notion, but…) Isn’t this what Holder was calling for?

See Holder, this is why we don’t talk. Because the second we say something, Jesse, Al, and the NAACP are right there to throw us under the bus. Conversations? I’d rather just smile and not be accused of being racist.

The truth is, the ball is in your court. (I’m sorry if my use of a basketball metaphor indirectly implies that I think all blacks play basketball or that this is the only type of metaphor they can understand) Stop with the ridiculous accusations and we will open up and talk.

Yeah I didn't think the Obama even wrote the bill it was President Nancy Pelosi.

I feel the NAACP along with Sharpton and everyone else who yells out over these silly minuet things should be sat in a classroom and read what racism means. Its a cartoon if you dont have a sense of humor then dont read it, its not for you. Plus if Barack is going to be our President he will need to have a sense of humor otherwise we're all doomed.

Anonymous said...

Look who is screaming racist. The black people call us whitey and honky but that is all right. But you people sure get your backs up at the slightest politically incorrect remark.

Anonymous said...

I have it on good authority - and this has nothing to do with the fact that he's black - that a monkey duo has written the last three Spike Lee movies. I think that is why he is so sensitive about this.

I would have said something like "It looks like we'll have to get another chimp to poop out the next stimulus bill".

Anonymous said...

Where were all these demands when everyone was comparing former President Bush to being a monkey and there were SEVERAL of them.

I can't say what I really feel about the man in the oval office now, one guy got stopped and a visit from the secret service for just having an anti odumbo sticker on his car.

He is useless in my book. And Pelosi and Reid wrote the stupid pork package.

Brown said...

Whats the point of apologizing you really don't mean it. Guess its called being a coward. The Post knew exactly what they meant. Just making things more worst by Apologizing.
Sorta Sorry! Ive never heard of that one before what does that mean,
are they really that stupid I guess not if we keep subscribing too them.

So what the NAAACP and Spike Lee are saying is that if we do not bow down to there demands they will call for BOYCOTTs or in other words riots, like in California over the Rodney King incident. They will last until they get there way. I pass thru the BET network every now and then and see slurrs towards non blacks and that is supposed to be acceptable. Publicity hounds like the Rev Jessie Jackson and his nine commandments, he did not like the one about thou shalt not commit adultry, so he just abides by 9 of them, and the Rev Al Sharpton. Freedom of speach, if you do notlike it start a process and try and get it changed do not threaten the American way of life just because you believe that something is directed at you.

I find it highly ironic that if George W Bush is compared to a chimpanzee, it was free speech and somehow entirely warranted, and yet when someone MAY have compared Barack Obama to a chimpanzee it is suddendly the start of the apocoloypse.

Just think about who in society is using double standards.

Anonymous said...

This is ridiculous! Congress wrote the Bill not Obama. This is fucken stupid. Fucken Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have so much fucken times on their hands, they think everything is targeting their fucken color. Holy shit they fucken are minorities too, but they always treat every other minorities like shit as if this is just their fucken Country. Stupid ass!!!! Get a fucken life!!!

Anonymous said...

I thought we were supposed to put all this crap behind us, but Al Sharpton, NAACP, and Spike Lee raise the issue. This is ridiculous--simple misinterpretation. Does it mean future cartoon caricatures can't emphasize Obama's prominent ears lest people think it looks like a chimpanzee? The New Yorker cover deserved controversy--not this.

Anonymous said...

Like anyone cares what spike thinks.

Anonymous said...

Screw Spike Lee, Al Sharpton and the NAACP. I loved the cartoon and I love free speech. These guys sound like a bunch of Nazis trying to shut down a newspaper because of an innocent cartoon that perfectly describes how this stimulus bill was written, by a bunch of monkeys, not racial connotation implied.

BTW, you jackasses can continue this nonsense, but just remember I get an extra hit of traffic every time you comment and it increases Search Engine Optimization in Google, so it's all good for me in the end. Especially when i capitalize on it and then delete all your comments afterwards.

There is no doubt in the minds of intelligent people that the cartoon was wwwaayyy over the top and totally out of line. However, my problem is not with the cartoonist, but he Editor's who did not have the sensitivity and common sense to allow it to be printed.

Some say that it is a double standard that George W. Bush can be compared to a chimp but Barack Obama cannot. Black America have been compared all through America's Racist History as chimps...coons and other terms meant to demean and de-humanize.
There are Black Men being shot down on a daily basis by cops for no reason other than being Black.
If any American don't get the uproar over this cartoon and can find nothing wrong with it...is the scariest piece of shit dust on the planet.

Satirizing public figures is something we as Americans have come to expect. However, there should be lines drawn when it comes to racist, hateful messages about anyone.

The cartoonist can draw whatever he have in his head. However, when it comes to the public, the Editor's must use discretion in what they allow to represent their publication.
That said...The Post is the most sub-standard publication in America.

The Playlist said...

Seriously, the people complaining that we're too PC, obviously have zero idea of the Post's racial tracklist. They're a terrible publication. Ironically, their entertainment reporting is generally their least offensive stuff, liz smith aside. Don't let that sound as a full on endorsement either, "least offensive."

Scaramouche - It would be ok if he were white?

How about the NAACP and Sharpton do something more than just complain. have never heard of sharpton, jackson, or the naacp doing anything positive for the young black community other then complain about getting thier feelings hurt.

For those of you who did take the bait and think there are 2 sides (is it racist or is it not) you are wrong. This whole episode is basically the Rakolta boycott all over again.

In 1989 Terry Rakolta started a boycott against the TV show Married With Children because of an episode she saw and didn't like. The show (probably) would have been canceled if not for this boycott. More people actually started watching the show and it helped FOX take off as a network.

I guess everyone has to remember where the source is from and The Post really is a Tabloid Paper. Not so long ago I watched Keith Olbermann talk about a story in the Post and how a snitch said this and that happened to Lindsey Lohan at a dinner. Keith went on to say that none of what they wrote happened and he knew that for a fact because he was at the dinner sitting at the next table.

I kind of understand how Spike Lee and Al Sharpton got into it so quickly. Neither are smart enough to have a wait and see attitude. And thanks to people like them much more of the world knows about this than really should. And they think they have done a great service with 300 people showing up. The other millions of US population are waiting to see what the Post says and does next.

Real Smart Guys!!!! Bravo. Next time...look at the source before jumping in.

And now that the socialists have taken over power their backers want to increase the censorship rules. Let those that disagree with their left-wing views be silenced.

Hey, people should be reading Pravda (The NY Times) not the NY Post anyway so that they can learn how everyone is supposed to think and act.

How does anyone think that the cartoonist was inferring anything towards President Obama? The stimulus bill WAS NOT written by our president. It was written by Congress and Senate, they are the chimps that wrote the darn thing.Either people are really thick or perhaps some are just looking to start a race war.

Jeffrey said...

Mentally oppressed people think that this is a racist cartoon. The democrat congress and senate are being depicted as chimpanzees, not obama. If someone wants to call obama a monkey, then so be it, but the cartoon doesn't. People that want to cast stones and not reasonably think will jump to conclusions, and they are the real racists.

BeanerECMO said...

Isn't this what Eric Holder wanted - a discussion of race, but we know the content of the character of Holder, Sharpton Jesse, Todd, the NAACP et al.

When will this ever end? Give me a break and worry about something that is important.

Sorry for rainin on ur parade of thinkin ya'll were going be able to take over this great nation by just havin a minority fer a preisident. It is just a silly drawing w/ a messege about the awful stimulus package that Mr. Obama pushed to get passed. He said in his campign that he was going to change the way Washigton ran. So far all he is doing is just letting it run whatever way it needs to get his ideas put into law or get a butt load of cash to waste on sensless projects that would have got funding threw normal due process. It wouldn't have to be borrowed from China and our great grandkids wouldn't have to pay for it. Amen to the Governers that ain't goin accept the money from the Obama recovery (or should I say disaster) bill. The NAACP, Al and Spike need to remember that they ain't the minority anymore. Want to hollar racism but it is okay for them to putdown what this country stands for, FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY.

Anonymous said...

This uproar is absolutely stooopid.

Anonymous said...

The NAACP is archaic and obsolete, anyone with me? IMAO the NAACP does nothing but hinder the growth of the black community. It makes huge deals out, lets be honest, stupid things like cartoons. The real problems within the black community and what they face in terms of discrimination is NEVER addressed. When I think of the NAACP I also think of ACLU. Both were started with good intentions, but they easily strayed off their intended path and become platforms for people within the organization to gain political power and push their political views on others.

I can't help but see the Similarity between this and how the Muslims got thier panties in a bunch over that cartoon of thier prophet. so I guess my question is do the people upset with this cartoon think that the artist was poking fun at thier prophet.

It was so nice when we had freedom in this country.

Gabe Toro said...

Wow, this became a retard orgy.

None of this would be an issue if the cartoon was amusing in any way. I would think the obvious illiteracy and right wing demagoguery of the Post and its readers are the crimes fueling this stupidity.

Oh, and white people- let me know the next time your skin color keeps you from getting a job or a promotion or a taxi or something. You pansies.

Anonymous said...

Hey Gabe Toro, being white kept me from getting ANY scholarship money out of high school. I had an A average and was white. Hispanic students who had LOWER grades than me of course got scholarship money for merely being brown. So STFU, you're talking about of you know where. You just hate right-wingers, probably because the are mostly more successful than you.

So what do you have to say to me getting denied scholarship money because I am white? I'm really waiting to see if you actually have an answer worth reading or just skirt the issue and point the finger again as most liberals do. Waiting....

Anonymous said...

Glad you didn't get that scholarship. You sound like a total twat.

Anonymous said...

You sound Hispanic, anchor baby?

Anonymous said...

It didn't matter than I didn't get the scholarship money. My white Father worked very hard and we could afford it. He came from nothing but still became very successful. He worked hard enough so his children could go to college. He doesn't expect government handouts like some people I can think of.

You're obviously not interested in have a discussion Gabe (funny, every Gabe I've ever known was a huge pussy). I answered your question as to whether being white has hindered you in any way. You clearly can't handle a dissenting opinion. Good luck with life.
