We were so busy and focused with EW's brief mention of the then-possibility of Heath Ledger's Modest Mouse-directed video one day surfacing (and yes, now it's coming out), that we totally missed something else in the piece.
Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," has a U.K. distributor and is scheduled to come out in June according to the magazine profile on its deceased star Heath Ledger.
There's obviously already been two reports (including the aforementioned EW piece) that strongly suggest the film could be too bizarro and that U.S. distributors are taking a wait-and-see attitude with the release However, if it premieres in the U.K. in June and is poorly received, does that mean it has even less of a shot of coming out in the U.S. unless a smaller distrib like IFC Films jumps at the chance? (then again, one report also says a U.S. deal could be struck soon)
There's also the potential this reaction to the reportedly-difficult film could happen even earlier if the picture does indeed debut at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in May as has been rumored/speculated. Either way, we had to note the June U.K. release date because so far, that's officially the first time any of the public will see it. But is this june release date in UK really official ?
According to EW it is.
I asked because the june release date is on imdb for months (as the "24th september US release date" was) so I just hope EW didn't copy and paste this piece of "information" from imdb.
(I'll just remind you that the film has a french producer and that the film is due for release in France on the 11th november. To me, it's a solid information 'cause it was apparently given by the french producer/distributor and it seems strange that almost 6 months could separate the UK release and the french one).
I recently spoke to the publicist for the film via email, and he said that they have not even shopped for a US distributor as they are waiting for the film to be completed first. They foresee no problems finding a distributor and are looking at a 4th quarter release in the U.S. This puts Parnassus during the holiday season, which is a really good slot, IMHO.
The IMDb dates are old. And most likely no longer accurate.
Heath, no ones going by IMDB, at least we aren't.
Maybe you don't go by IMDB, but you can quote people who checked imdb and report its "onformation" in their articles, so it's quite the same... Fo example, the origin of "24th september" US release date was imdb... You should take the "information" with a big grain of salt when you can also find them on imdb...
You' rather check the "terry gilliam fanzine" directed by Phil Stubbs who keep in touch with Gilliam himself : http://www.smart.co.uk/dreams/tgnews09.htm
I'm back... The june release date is even gone from imdb : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1054606/releaseinfo
and there was an article in the empire magazine from january that talked about a release date for this autumn : http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7877/heath5dx5.jpg

(taken from there : http://www.philstubbs.com/dreamsboard/cgi-bin/teemz/teemz.cgi?board=_master&action=opentopic&topic=65&forum=The_Imaginarium_of_Doctor_Parnassus)
but it could mean a US release date ?
@HeathHeathens
Care to pass around the publicists email?
Like I said, i was never going off IMDB, I was going off EW's reporting that presumably (hopefully! god) did much more than just look off IMDB considering they talked to the director himself and i would ASSUME any good reporter who talked to the director would have received that info straight from his mouth.
