Warner Bros & Criterion Let You Upgrade Old DVDs (And HD-DVDS) To Blu-Ray, (Relatively) Cheap!
The good-taste DVD barons at the Criterion Collection have already announced the ability to upgrade your collection of Criterion DVDs to Blu-Ray by simply mailing $20 and your old DVD back to the prestigious collection house, and they in turn, will send you a Blu-Ray copy, voila.
Now Warner Bros. has announced, "Red2Blu," a similar program that let's you trade in now-defunct HD-DVDs, but at a far cheaper price: $4.95 + shipping and handling for all you DVD-philes that can't bear to own "Batman Forever" in what isn't the finest quality available. I think the Warner Bros thing is just for the new defunct HD-DVD format. I dont think you can send in standard DVD's.
you are correct, thank you, sir.
Anyone else think this thing is kind of a swindle? Personally, I'm still reluctant to jump on Blu-Ray bandwagon (I think it's a laserdisc-esque waystation on the path to a huge media breakthrough). Along with what has been reported as certain ill-cropped films and near-disasters of transfer (judging from the "French Connection" debacle), I don't think it's quite yet worth it, even if the "Godfather" transfer is a good one. Maybe I'm just a cinematic curmudgeon
I dunno about swindle per se cause i don't know enough about it (obvs!), but yes, I'm a late adopter to anything that forces me to rebuy everything all over again for obvious reasons.
I'm not going to jump to Blu-Ray until i'm forced too. I did the same thing with CDs and only started buyin them in what... 91? 92? My first CD was Ween's Pure Guava cause i clung to my casettes and LPS.
ok. they charge $7 for shipping. so its really like $12.
more importantly does UNIVERSAL do anything like this????? the only hd dvds i have are from universal. they are the combo format so im not really mad. but i would trade them in.
