Last week, a set of candidates emerged to play the new "Spider-Man" and they all shared a common trait - young, as to be expected, but totally white. Granted, this sort of casting is normal in Hollywood blockbusters, but naturally, this rankled a few growing tired of the Logan Lermans and Jamie Bells of the world. And so, "Community" star Donald Glover has thrown himself into the casting pool, via Twitter, for "Spider-Man."
"Some people are mistaken," says the comedian, who apparently is taking this seriously. "I don’t want to just be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man." And what's wrong with that? Glover's a multi-talented comedian, actor and musician, at the appropriate age, and has a striking physicality that would be appropriate for an action picture. Is "Spider-Man" that vehicle?
Probably not, as we don't see Sony rocking the boat enough to radically change the race of the character. When it comes to franchise reboots, studios remain hesitant about completely cutting their ties from the originals, as there's always a select few who regard the films as straight sequels, though we'd be more than happy to accept a black Spider-Man - Peter Parker is a kid from a lower-middle-class Queens family, and that's not an identity that's specifically white. Plus, god forbid, for the first time, Spidey would actually be funny! Join the Facebook support group here.

If Spiderman never took off his costume, then yes but Peter Parker is white, period. So if Donald Glover loves Spiderman and I don't doubt that he does, then why would he want to tamper with that? It changes the story entirely. So obviously their is a want for it. Donald should create a comic book character and when he's spider guy he can can himself Arachnid Jones or something. The age of the remake has made people flip their collective wigs! Oh and if it's necessary to say...I'm black, er African-American (my apologies, I grew up being called black).
It's ridiculous. I don't get this bullshit - same goes for any "black Bond" discussions - if you wanna do something meaningful, why don't you make your own thing instead of just trying to fit into white establishments? And so fucking what if he's white? There are white people in the world, they're no less valid as people than any other ethnicity. People act as if not shoehorning other ethnicities into everything is tantamount to not acknowledging them. Regardless, the main problem is simply that Spider-man is not black. This is by and large an adaption, not a radical reinterpretation.
This will never happen in a million years because this kid is not a star. Not because he's not white.
This will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, happen so it's not worth fretting over or expending energy on.
Donald Glover is at least as famous, if not moreso, than a lot of the other names mentioned.
Also, hilarious that one anon is talking about Donald Glover not being allowed into "white establishments."
