Again, this is pretty much a no shocker considering "The Karate Kid" remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan made a surprising $56 million in its opening first week.
Deadline is reporting that Sony is apparently already meeting with writers to hear pitches for a "Karate Kid 2."
The film cost a semi-modest $4o million to make and has already made $68 million internationally. $100 million domestically is not out of sight for the studio and internationally they should be able to at least clear $120 million. That's not gigantic numbers, but enough to start hearing pitches anyhow.
Our guess is the company will wait to see how the film closes financially before green lighting a sequel. No writers have been named so far, but the first film was written by Christopher Murphey. Director Harold Zwart is known for "The Pink Panther 2" (yes, it's not Shakespeare surrounding this project).
Papa Will Smith must be proud of this news. While almost none of the The Playlist team saw the film at screenings or in theaters, the film received some surprisingly decent reviews including one from Time Out New York that really surprised us in its positivity.

Look at the stories you are covering... karate kid 2 (remake), that fucking 300 owl movie... why bother covering this, your site is good and brings a lot of people news about art/indie films. Leave the shitty films to AICN and don't do your site a disservice by giving them press. How many readers are you gaining by having Smurfs news? you are better than that, it will also help shape the kind of personality playlist has as a blog.
regurgitate your feelings why don't you. I only have so much time to help today, i just did what i could, there's a lot of shit stories out there, (eat me).
@Cause then they'd be a bias site you idiot.
As for the remake I have one thing to say.....................Khannnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!
its ok not to write a news story every 30 minutes if there is nothing to write about. it's just this place used to be more anti-fanboy and well now we all love our comic book movies and trash sequels and remakes (as they are covered giving them cred).
I would love a biased site that just focuses on good movies, hell i dont think i am alone there. the less we say about shity films, the less of a leg they have to stand on.
dont become aint it cool blog
Hey, Anonymous, just cos it's there doesn't mean you have to read it, hon. The Playlist still covers arthouse and indie movies (and tends to give them far more space than this sort of stuff - note the KK2 post is what, less than a fifth? the length of the "Let It Rain" review, posted just over an hour before which I assume is the sort 'good' movie you refer to). If the Playlist collectively has a wider field of movie interest than you do, that's to its credit. And as long as it still covers the smaller stuff to the degree it does, you don't really have any cause for complaint unless you have not yet worked out how to use the scroll function on your browser.
LOL, nicely said.
I don't see why anyone on The Playlist would be motivated to see a two and a half hour remake of "The Karate Kid" from the director of "One Night At McCool's."
