For their debut feature film, the French directing team of Pascal Sid and Julien Lacombe are certainly swinging for the fences.
Variety reports the duo have enlisted model/actress Laetitia Casta to star in their forthcoming suspense film "Behind The Walls." The 3D fantasy film takes place in 1922 and centers on "a young novelist who moves to a creepy village to write a book and falls victim to terrifying hallucinations and nightmares." There is no word yet on just how they will achieve both a period film and dazzling 3D effects with just $5 million. Maybe $5 million goes much further in France than it does on this side of the ocean? It's safe to assume the 3D effects will be run through some kind of post-production process, and perhaps they'll rummage through some attics for the period gear.
The film is slated to be released in the early part of 2011.

Actually they won't add the 3D in post-prod, they will shoot with stereoscopic cameras. Apparently they thought deeply about it, storyboarding and preping heavily etc. because they said that just changing lenses on such a film is much more work than on a traditional shoot, as you have to change 2 lenses and then resynchronize them.
They also said that their initial budget was 2.5 million euros and that shooting in 3D just increased it to 3.5 million euros (so $5 million).
It's a small budget but a big budget in France is around the 20 million euros mark (or more, of course, but for example, Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs was done for 27 million euros), so it's not ridiculous either.
This information comes from this french website : http://www.filmsactu.com/dossier-cinema-derriere-les-murs-de-la-3d-a-la-francaise-9919.htm (there are preproduction designs there as well).
don't worry guys, if its any good, they'll dumb it down spend $100m shooting it in English for the American market!
