You have to give Paramount credit, they almost convinced Oscar winning director Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth") to direct a 3D movie of teen sensation Justin Bieber but less than twenty four hours after the announcement was made, the director bailed on the project.
Well things are moving full speed ahead again as Jon Chu, the mastermind behind "Step Up 2: The Streets" and "Step Up 3D" has landed the gig from what was an apparently twenty name long list of contenders. We shudder to think who those others were.
Production on the film is already underway and will continue over the next few weeks as cameras follow The Biebster on tour for behind-the-scenes footage, leading up his Madison Square Garden gig on August 31st which will be filmed using 3D cameras. And with a release date already slotted for February 11, 2011 Paramount are hoping that the Bieber buzz will hold long enough for the film to make some bucks at the box office. Because let's face it, this kid is on minute twelve of the fifteen that he's got.

This seems to be an infinitely more appropriate choice.
Winning an Oscar (esp for documentary) doesn't make a director automatically better in every way than another director. Guggenheim has not shown any particular ability with visuals, dance, or music, so I suspect that Chu would deliver a better musical biopic.

This is such a great insight into how unplugged this blog can be from pop culture. We all know pop stars have a short half-life, but the Biebs is here to stay for awhile. That was like saying Miley Cyrus would be gone in a few months back in 2007.
