Director Lars Von Trier has moved in many directions in his career but it seems there is one project that lost the director's attention and never ended up being finished.
"Dimension" first went in front of cameras in 1991 starring Stellan Skarsgård ("Dogville"), Eddie Constantine ("Alphaville"), Jean-Marc Barr ("Manderlay") and Katrin Cartlidge ("Breaking the Waves"). Not much is known about what the finished film might have looked like, but thematically the director said back in October 1990, “Our idea is to make a feature film, with the march of time as its all-prevailing undercurrent.” The original plan was shoot footage over the course of thirty years and release the film on what would have been the director's 68th birthday, April 30, 2024. And while it appears he did continue to shoot footage in some of the following years for what would have been "a European film collage – a sort of monument for the future" the director lost interest and eventually abandoned the project.
Well, Von Trier fans are in for a treat as the unfinished film will be released on August 25th via Danish film magazine Ekko. The film will be on DVD that will be included with magazine that will also feature twelve Nordic short films by a solid roster filmmakers including "World Of Glory" by Roy Andersson, "Drengen der gik baglæns" by Thomas Vinterberg and "Rocki VI" by Aki Kaurismäki. While the complete special features for the disc haven't been detailed, "Dimension" will have a commentary by Danish Von Trier-scholar Peter Schepelern who intriguingly describes the film as a “poetic gangster story.”
While we eagerly await Von Trier's psychological disaster film "Melancholia" which is currently in production will likely unspool at next year's Cannes Film Festival, "Dimension" will serve as a great placeholder until then. --Thanks to Kasper Lundberg

Do we know how long it'll be in its unfinished form?
When did he last shoot footage for it? Around the time of Dogville?
1991-1997, I think he shot 3 minutes a year, so it should be about 21 min. it's a shame that he abandoned the project.
I had a nightmare a few nights ago about Melancholia might be like. A dude freaked out about the end of the world and started peeling his own face off. I can't wait.
